Season firewood by splitting it, stacking it off the ground where sun and wind reach it, covering only the top, and waiting. Softwood needs about six months. Most hardwoods want a year, and oak often takes two. The target is wood holding less than 20% moisture.
That number decides everything. Below it, wood lights from a handful of kindling and burns with a steady flame. Above it, the fire spends its energy boiling water instead of making heat, and you get hissing, smoke, and a pile that quits the moment you stop fussing over it.
Seasoning looks like doing nothing. It isn’t. Four decisions you make on day one determine whether that wood is ready in six months or still wet in eighteen.

What Seasoning Does Inside the Log
Wood holds water in two completely different places, and they behave nothing alike.
Free water sits in the hollow cell cavities, like water in a bundle of drinking straws. It drains and evaporates quickly.
Bound water is chemically locked into the cell walls themselves. It only begins to move once the free water is gone, and it leaves slowly.
The handover happens around 30% moisture content, a threshold called fiber saturation. Everything above 30% is the easy half. Everything below is slow, patient work, and that final stretch from 30% down to 20% is where most of your calendar disappears.
This is why a log can feel dry outside and still be soaked in the middle. The surface reached equilibrium with the air months ago. The core is still working.
Why 20% is the line
The University of Georgia Extension puts it simply: well-seasoned firewood contains less than 20 percent of its weight in water.
Above that, water leaves as steam. Steam cools the fire, and a cool fire burns incompletely, which is what you see as smoke. Outdoors that means a smoky camp and sooty pots. Indoors it means creosote condensing in the flue.
If you have been burning wet wood in a stove or fireplace, have the chimney inspected before you run another season on it.

How Wet Is Green Wood? Wetter Than You Think
A freshly cut log has more in common with a wet sponge than with fuel.
University of Georgia Extension wood products specialist Julian Beckwith describes freshly cut wood as holding up to 50 percent of its weight in water, with a single fresh-cut cord of oak containing nearly enough water to fill six 55-gallon drums.
Six drums. All of it has to evaporate before the wood is worth burning.
Some species start twice as wet as others
Here is the detail that explains more about seasoning times than density does. Living trees differ enormously in how much water they carry.
The University of Kentucky’s forestry extension publishes moisture content figures for living trees by species. The spread is startling:

Ash starts at 45%. Sycamore starts at 114%. They are not the same job.
That is the real reason ash has a reputation for burning almost green, and why elm and sycamore frustrate everyone who tries to dry them. You are not fighting the wood’s hardness. You are fighting how much water it carried when it came down.

Why you will see numbers over 100%
Sycamore at 114% looks like a typo. It isn’t.
Two different formulas share the name “moisture content.” Dry basis divides the weight of water by the weight of the wood alone, so a log carrying more water than wood goes past 100%. Wet basis divides water by total weight, and can never exceed 100%.
Forestry publications use dry basis, and so does your moisture meter, because meters are calibrated against oven-dried samples. Wet basis shows up mainly in biomass and fuel-pellet work.
That is good news. The 20% on your meter and the 20% in an extension bulletin mean the same thing, and there is nothing to convert. One practical catch: most consumer meters only display up to about 40%, so a genuinely green log will just peg at the top of the scale instead of showing you 80%.
How Long Firewood Takes to Season
Time on its own dries nothing. Time plus airflow plus exposed surface dries wood.
The University of Missouri Extension advises that most dense hardwoods require at least one year to season fully. Treat that as the floor.

Climate moves every row. In dry, windy country the fast end applies. In the humid Southeast or the Pacific Northwest, add months, and accept that air-dried wood will only ever come down to the local equilibrium, which in a damp region may bottom out near 15% rather than 12%.
Exposure matters more than people expect. A pile in full sun on a breezy slope beats an identical pile in a shaded, still corner by months.
Six Steps That Actually Dry Wood
1. Cut it short
Sixteen inches is the standard for a reason. Wood loses moisture through its end grain many times faster than through its sides, so every cut you make opens a fast exit. A 12-inch piece dries noticeably quicker than a 20-inch one.
2. Split it, and split it small
This is the step people skip, and it is the one that matters most.
University of Maryland Extension tracked wood drying in the field and found that live hickory left in unsplit 16 to 18 inch rounds still held over 30% moisture after a full year, while split pieces dried far faster.
A year of waiting, wasted, because the rounds were never opened. Bark is built to keep water inside a tree, and it does that job just as well after the tree is down. Splitting breaks the seal and multiplies surface area at the same time. Our rule of thumb: nothing thicker than your wrist goes in the stack unsplit.

3. Get it off the ground

4. Stack for airflow, not for volume

5. Cover the top only

6. Start in late winter
Cut and split between February and April. Deciduous trees carry less water when the sap is down, and you hand the pile a full summer of sun and wind before the first cold night.

How to Know When It’s Ready
Use a meter.
Maryland Extension is blunt about the method: the only way to tell if a load is well seasoned is to measure the internal moisture in the middle of a freshly split piece.
That sentence contains the whole trick. Not the outside. Not the end. Not the bark.
Split a log open, then test the fresh face immediately. The outer inch reached equilibrium with the air months ago and will read 12% on wood that is 35% in the core.
Push the pins across the grain near the center of that fresh face, and take three readings from different pieces in the stack. Bring cold wood indoors for a few hours first, because meters read low on frozen wood.

Seven Seasoning Myths That Cost You a Season
“Wood seasons fine in the round.” It barely dries at all. See the Maryland hickory result above.
“A year is always enough.” Enough for maple. Oak disagrees. Elm and sycamore disagree harder.
“A closed shed keeps it dry, so it dries faster.” Without airflow there is nowhere for the moisture to go. Wood in a sealed space reaches ambient humidity and stops, and often molds.
“You can tell by weight.” Weight is a useful comparison between two pieces of the same species. Across species it tells you almost nothing, since a dry hickory split outweighs a wet pine one.
“Standing dead trees are already seasoned.” The bark is still holding water in, and a tree dead long enough to dry is often punky enough to have lost real heat value.
“Pine causes creosote because of the resin.” The University of Georgia Extension guidance cited above reports the opposite: research has found this false, and buildup is more often the result of burning wood at low temperatures. Wet wood of any species is the real culprit.
If You’re Buying Instead of Drying
“Seasoned” is a marketing word in most states, not a regulated one. Assume nothing.
Ask when it was cut and split, not when it was delivered. Ask for a piece to split open on the spot. If a seller won’t let you check a fresh face with a meter, buy elsewhere.

Dry wood also pays off the moment you get there. It lights faster when you are building a campfire, it makes the clean coal bed you need for cooking over a fire pit, and it produces far less of the smoke that hangs around a camp all evening.
