Campground Etiquette: 15 Unwritten Rules

On my second camping trip ever, I took a shortcut. Site 12 to the restrooms was a long walk around the loop, and site 15’s patch of grass sat right there in between, empty chairs, nobody home. So I cut…
Most people think getting a campsite is luck. It isn’t. It’s a system, and once you can see the system you stop losing sites to people who simply knew when to click.
This section is about the whole business of finding somewhere to sleep. How reservation windows work and why good sites vanish within minutes of opening. What to do when every weekend within three hours is booked solid, which is more solvable than it looks. How walk-up sites are really handed out, and when you’d need to arrive. It’s Tuesday. The weekend forecast is flawless, the cooler is practically packing itself — and every campground within two hours shows the same gray wall of “Reserved.” If you’ve just lived that moment, take a breath, because here’s the thing…

My first attempt at booking a campsite online took forty minutes, three browser tabs, and a phone-a-friend — and I still managed to reserve the wrong Tuesday. Not the wrong site. The wrong week. Standing in my kitchen, I remember…
