Camping Basics

First trips go wrong in remarkably predictable ways, and hardly any of it is gear. It’s decisions. The flat spot chosen in daylight without thinking about where water goes. The food that quietly needed a fridge. Arriving at dusk with everything still to do.

This section is written for the stage before you know what you don’t know. What actually matters on trip one and what you can ignore for now. What goes in the car, including the handful of things people forget every single time. And the mistakes that are close to universal, each with a fix that takes about a minute once somebody has told you.

There’s a money answer here that beginners rarely get. You don’t need to buy anything. Borrowing, renting and improvising will get you through a first weekend for very little, and you come home actually knowing which purchase is worth making instead of guessing in a shop.

Two more things worth having before you go. The vocabulary, because booking sites and gear labels are written for people who already camp. And a plan for the first twenty minutes after you arrive, which is where a relaxed weekend is either won or lost.
