Types of Firewood for Campfires: What Burns Best and What to Never Burn

The best types of firewood for a campfire are dense hardwoods: oak, hickory, beech, sugar maple, ash and black locust. They burn slow, throw steady heat, and collapse into a bed of coals you can cook on. Softwoods like pine, fir and cedar light fast and burn out fast, which makes them excellent kindling and disappointing fuel.

But species is the second question. The first one is whether the wood is dry. A seasoned pine log will out-perform a green oak log every single night of the week, and no amount of lighter fluid fixes wet wood.

This guide is written for the fire ring at your campsite and the fire pit in your yard, not a wood stove in a basement. Different job, different rules. If your fire pit runs on gas or propane, the fuel question is a different one entirely.

Getting the fuel right is half the work. Knowing how to build a campfire with it is the other half.

Three Things Decide How Wood Burns

Forget the species chart for a second. Three physical properties do almost all the work, and once you understand them you can size up an unfamiliar wood pile in about ten seconds.

Density: heavier means longer

Wood burns at roughly the same energy per pound no matter the species. A pound of pine and a pound of oak hold about the same heat. The difference is that a chunk of oak weighs more than the same-sized chunk of pine, because the cell walls are thicker and there is less air inside.

That is the whole secret. Dense wood packs more fuel into the same log, so it burns longer and hotter per piece. Pick up two similar-sized splits. The heavier one wins.

Dryness: the one that beats everything

Freshly cut wood is soaking wet on the inside. Utah State University Extension notes that green firewood can be 50% or more water by weight, and that green wood produces less heat because the fire has to boil that water off before it can burn the wood itself.

You feel this as a fire that hisses, smokes sideways, refuses to catch, and dies the moment you stop fussing over it. Target wood under 20% moisture. Seasoning takes anywhere from four months to two years depending on species.

Resin: why some wood spits

Conifers store sap in resin pockets. When the fire hits a sealed pocket, the trapped moisture and resin flash to gas and the log throws a spark two feet sideways.

That is why we keep pine, spruce and fir out of the late-evening fire when people are sitting close in fleece jackets. A single ember will melt a nylon sleeping bag before you smell it.

Hardwood and Softwood Are Not Rivals

The internet loves to frame this as hardwood good, softwood bad. At a campfire that framing is useless, because a good fire needs both.

Softwood is your ignition system. It is light, resinous, full of air, and it catches from a match with almost no coaxing. Birch bark, fatwood splinters, thin cedar shavings and pencil-thin pine sticks are what turn a flame into a fire.

Hardwood is your engine. Once you have flames strong enough to accept a wrist-thick split, hardwood takes over and gives you the two hours of heat you actually came for.

Our rule of thumb at CamperishTrails: softwood gets you to flame in five minutes, hardwood gets you to midnight. Bring a little of both and stop arguing about which is better.

The Best Types of Firewood, Ranked by What They Do

Heat output is usually measured in millions of BTUs per cord. The numbers below come from the Utah State Extension figures cited above, rounded, and they assume properly seasoned wood. Treat them as a ranking, not a lab result. Dry wood still wins. Moisture content moves these figures more than species does.

Tier 1: the wood you hoard

Osage orange (hedge), black locust, shagbark hickory, beech, white oak. Roughly 26–33 million BTU per cord.

Osage orange is the hottest common firewood in North America and it throws sparks like a firework, so it belongs in a deep fire ring, not an open pit with chairs pulled close. Black locust is the quiet star: it burns hot, smells clean, and produces very little ash. Hickory gives you the best cooking coals in the country. Oak is the reliable one, and it is what most bundled campground firewood is east of the Rockies.

The trade-off is that all of these are hard work. Oak needs 12 to 24 months of seasoning. Hickory and locust will bounce a dull splitting maul back at your shins.

A deep coal bed from these woods is what makes camping at night comfortable rather than something to endure. It is also the point in the evening when the campfire stories start.

Tier 2: the everyday wood

White ash, sugar maple, red oak, yellow birch, black cherry, elm. Roughly 19–25 million BTU per cord.

Ash is the camper’s favorite for a reason. It splits along the grain almost by suggestion, seasons in about a year, and burns clean with very little smoke. Sugar maple is nearly as good and easier to find in the Northeast. Cherry smells wonderful and makes decent coals.

Elm is the one to be careful with. It burns fine but the grain is interlocked and stringy, so hand-splitting it is genuinely miserable.

Tier 3: burns, but plan around it

Aspen, poplar, cottonwood, basswood, box elder, sycamore. Roughly 13–19 million BTU per cord.

These are light, fast-burning woods that leave almost no coal bed. You will feed the fire every fifteen minutes. Cottonwood in particular smokes heavily and smells sour. If it is what the campground sells, buy an extra bundle and accept the schedule.

Softwoods: brilliant at one job

Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, lodgepole pine, western red cedar, spruce. Roughly 15–21 million BTU per cord.

Douglas-fir is the exception that surprises people. It is a softwood that out-burns red maple, which is why it is the default firewood across the Pacific Northwest and Rockies. Cedar is the best natural fire starter on the continent and one of the sparkiest woods you can burn.

Do not feel bad about a softwood fire. Half the mountain west has no other option.

Which Wood to Cook Over

Once you move from flames to coals, species starts to matter for flavor as well as heat. Foil packets and hot dogs will not notice. A dutch oven or a steak absolutely will. This is the whole basis of cooking over coals rather than flames, and it is worth understanding before you plan any serious camp meals.

  • Oak is the safe default. Balanced smoke, huge coal bed, works with anything.
  • Hickory is bold and bacon-sweet. Excellent with pork and chicken, overpowering on fish.
  • Sugar maple is mild and faintly sweet. Good with vegetables and poultry.
  • Cherry and apple are gentle and slightly fruity, and they darken meat to a nice color.
  • Mesquite is intense and fast. It is the Southwest standard and it will bully anything delicate.
  • Alder is light and clean, and it is the traditional Pacific Northwest wood for salmon.

Keep softwoods out of the cooking fire. Pine, fir, spruce and cedar carry resin that leaves soot on your pot and a turpentine edge on your food. Burn them early to build the fire, then let them burn down before food goes anywhere near the coals.

What You’ll Find Where You Camp

Firewood is a local product. Nobody trucks oak to Montana. Knowing the regional default saves you standing at a camp store wondering why they have never heard of beech.

If you camp in the Rockies expecting an eastern hardwood fire, you will be disappointed and cold. Adjust the plan: buy two bundles instead of one, and build a smaller, tighter fire that you feed more often.

Wood You Should Never Burn

This is the part that matters most, and it has nothing to do with heat. Some materials release genuinely harmful smoke, and an open campfire puts your face right in it.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s Burn Wise guidance is direct on this point: never burn garbage, plastics or pressure-treated wood, and burn only dry, seasoned wood. The full campfire list:

  • Pressure-treated lumber. Older stock contains arsenic compounds. Look for the greenish tint and the grid of small incision marks. The ash is hazardous too.
  • Painted, stained or varnished wood. Finishes release toxic fumes as they burn.
  • Plywood, particleboard, OSB and MDF. The adhesives and resins are the problem, not the wood.
  • Shipping pallets. Many are chemically fumigated, and you rarely know what was spilled on them.
  • Saltwater driftwood. Salt releases corrosive chlorinated compounds when burned.
  • Poison ivy, oak and sumac vines. Urushiol travels in smoke and can cause a severe reaction in the airways and eyes. The hairy vine wrapped around a downed log counts.
  • Oleander and other known-toxic shrubs. Never use unidentified branches as roasting sticks.
  • Trash, cardboard with heavy print, and anything laminated.

If someone breathes a lungful of smoke from burning treated wood or poison ivy vine, move upwind into fresh air immediately. If coughing, wheezing or eye irritation does not settle quickly, or breathing becomes difficult, stop and get medical help.

Smoke direction matters too. Watching where yours drifts is basic campground etiquette, and a smoky fire from wet wood will make you unpopular three sites down.

One myth worth clearing up: pine is not dangerous in an open campfire. The creosote warning attached to pine is a chimney problem, not an outdoor one. Pine sparks and smokes, which is a good reason to keep it out of a late-night fire, but it is not toxic.

How to Check a Bundle Before You Buy It

You’re standing at a camp store with thirty seconds and no tools. Here’s what to check.

Look at the ends. Seasoned splits show radial cracks running out from the center like a pie. Green wood ends are smooth and often damp.

Bang two pieces together. Dry wood gives a sharp crack. Wet wood gives a dull thud that you feel more than hear.

Check the bark. On well-seasoned hardwood the bark is loose and often falls off in your hand.

Look for gray. Sun-exposed seasoned wood turns silver-gray on the outside while staying pale inside.

A note on labels: kiln-dried is not the same as heat-treated. Kiln-dried means the moisture was driven out. Heat-treated means the wood was held at a temperature high enough for long enough to kill pests inside it, and only certified heat-treated firewood is considered safe to transport long distances. If you plan to carry wood any real distance, that distinction matters, and the next section explains why.

Can You Gather Firewood at Camp?

Sometimes, and the rules change with the land you are standing on.

In developed campgrounds the answer is usually no. Gathering is often prohibited outright because the surrounding woods have already been picked clean by twenty years of campers, and downed wood is habitat.

On national forest land, the Forest Service asks you to collect only dead and down wood and to check current fire restrictions before you plan on a fire at all. Cutting standing trees, alive or dead, generally requires a permit. The Bureau of Land Management applies similar dead-and-down rules for campfire wood on BLM land.

National parks are the strictest. Most prohibit gathering entirely.

Three practical rules if you do gather:

  1. Dead, down and detached. If you have to pull, cut or break it off something living, leave it.
  2. Wrist-thick maximum. Larger downed logs are habitat and take years to season anyway.
  3. Spread out. Walk 200 yards from camp before you start collecting so the campsite ring stays intact.

Dispersed camping on public land usually gives you the most latitude here, but the restrictions still apply and fire bans override everything.

Why You Shouldn’t Bring Firewood From Home

This one surprises people, and it is the single highest-stakes rule in this guide.

Firewood is the main way invasive insects and tree diseases travel long distances. A single infested log can start an outbreak hundreds of miles from the nearest existing one. The USDA reports that emerald ash borer alone has killed hundreds of millions of ash trees in North America since it turned up near Detroit in 2002, and identifies moving firewood as a primary pathway for spreading these pests.

The National Park Service guidance is refreshingly specific about distance: 10 miles or less is best, no more than 50 miles, and leave leftover wood at your campsite rather than taking it home.

So the rule is simple. Buy it where you burn it. Buy from the campground host, a nearby gas station or a roadside stand within a few miles of your site. Burn all of it, and leave whatever is left for the next camper.

How Much Firewood Do You Actually Need?

More than you think. Campground bundles are smaller than they look.

A typical bundle sold at a camp store runs about 0.75 cubic feet and holds six to eight splits. That is roughly 90 minutes of a modest evening fire. For a normal night, plan on two bundles per fire. For a cold night where the fire is your heat source, three.

Firewood sold in bulk uses the cord, and the terminology gets slippery. A full cord is a stacked pile measuring 4 by 4 by 8 feet, or 128 cubic feet. A “face cord” or “rick” is only one row deep, so it is often a third of that, and it is where most firewood disputes start. Ask for the actual dimensions before you pay.
