To light a gas fire pit: open the propane tank valve slowly, wait about thirty seconds, then push and turn the control knob while holding a lighter or pressing the igniter at the burner. To turn it off, close the burner knob and close the tank valve, then confirm the flame is fully out. Never pour water into a gas burner.
Those two sequences cover most of what people need. At CamperishTrails we’ve run both kinds for years, and the gas ones fail in a handful of predictable ways. The rest of this guide is the part that trips owners up: the leak check nobody does, why the flame dies thirty seconds after you let go of the knob, and what “smokeless” actually means.
One thing to sort out first, because the whole article branches on it. A gas fire pit and a smokeless fire pit are not the same product. Gas pits burn propane or natural gas through a burner. The famous smokeless pits (Solo Stove, Breeo, Tiki) burn wood in a double-wall shell. Different fuel, different fixes, different shutdown.

Which Fire Pit Do You Actually Have?
Check the fuel source first. How to light a fire pit depends entirely on the answer. If there’s a hose and a tank, it’s gas. If you feed it split logs, it’s wood, even if the box said smokeless.

The Five-Minute Check Does
Do this before the first light of the season, and any time the tank has been off the unit. It takes five minutes.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission’s leak procedure for LP gas appliances is simple: open the gas supply valve fully and apply a soapy solution with a brush at the connection point. If bubbles appear, there’s a leak. Try tightening the tank connection; if that doesn’t stop it, close the valve and have the unit repaired by a professional.
The same CPSC guidance says to visually inspect hoses for cracking, brittleness, holes and leaks, and to check whether your model has been recalled.
That recall point is not hypothetical. In February 2018 the CPSC announced a recall of about 58,000 outdoor gas fire pit tables because the bowl base lacked a heat shield to protect people from burns while turning off the propane tank after use. Three people had been burned doing the most ordinary thing imaginable: shutting it down.
Mix the solution properly. A tablespoon of dish soap in a cup of water, brushed on, not misted. Thin spray gives thin bubbles you’ll miss.
Never check for a leak with a flame. Obvious written down. Less obvious at dusk with a lighter already in your hand. A spray bottle of soapy water earns its place on the camping checklist if you travel with a portable unit.

Lighting a Match-Lit Propane Fire Pit
Match-lit units have no igniter. You supply the flame.
- Clear the burner. Move lava rock or glass away from the burner ports so you can see them. Media that has drifted over the ports is the most common cause of a no-light.
- Open the tank valve slowly. All the way, but slowly. A fast open can trip the excess-flow safety in the connector and choke the gas down to a trickle.
- Wait thirty seconds. Gas has to travel the hose.
- Get your flame in position first. Long lighter or extended match at the burner, then turn the control knob. Not the other way around.
- Turn the knob to high. It should catch within a couple of seconds.
- Back off to your flame height once it’s running.
If it doesn’t light within about five seconds, turn the knob off, wait five full minutes, and try again. That pause matters. Propane is heavier than air and pools in the bowl, and lighting a bowl that’s been quietly filling produces a short, startling whump that will take your eyebrows with it.
Lighting a Spark or Electronic Ignition Fire Pit
Spark-ignition units add a piezo button; electronic units add a battery and sometimes a control panel. The gas part is identical.
The sequence is the same, with one addition: check the battery first. A dead AA in the igniter module is behind an enormous share of “my fire pit broke” complaints. Most modules take one AA or a 9V, usually behind a twist cap under the control panel.
Push the knob in, turn to the pilot or ignition position, and press the igniter in a steady rhythm rather than machine-gunning it. Each press needs a moment to build a spark.
Hold the knob down. On units with a pilot and a flame sensor, you have to keep the knob pressed for 20 to 60 seconds after the flame catches. Let go too early and it dies. That’s not a fault; that’s the safety system doing its job, and it’s the single most misdiagnosed fire pit problem there is. More on why in a moment.
Hold times vary by unit, so check your manual rather than trusting a number from the internet.
How to Turn Off a Gas Fire Pit
Both valves end up closed. That part isn’t negotiable. The short version of how to turn off a fire pit running on gas: close the fuel, then confirm the flame is out.
The order is where advice splits, and we’d rather tell you that plainly than pretend there’s one universal rule. Some guidance for LP gas appliances says close the tank first and let the residual gas in the hose burn off, then close the knob. Most fire pit manuals say knob first, then tank. Follow your unit’s manual, because it was written for your specific valve and hose.
What matters more than the order:
- Confirm the flame is actually out. Not low. Out.
- Mind the heat when you reach for the tank. This is exactly what the CPSC recall above was about. The bowl and the base stay hot, and the tank valve often sits directly underneath. Use the back of your hand to test the air near the door before reaching in, or wait.
- Close the tank valve fully, clockwise until it stops. A partly closed valve still feeds gas.
- Never douse it. No water, ever, into a gas burner. Water in the burner tube and orifices means corrosion, blockage, and a unit that won’t light next time. On a wood fire, water is the answer. Here it’s the problem.
- Cover it once cool, not while warm. Trapped heat under a vinyl cover melts the cover.
If you’re used to wood fires, the mental switch takes a season. With wood you add water and stir until everything is cold. With gas you remove the fuel and walk away.

When It Won’t Light
Work down this list in order. Most no-light problems sit in the first three rows. Start at the tank.

The excess-flow trip is the one that fools everyone. Modern tank connectors contain a safety that clamps down if it senses a sudden surge, and opening the tank valve fast while the burner knob is open looks exactly like a leak to it. The symptom is a flame that lights but stays pathetically small no matter what you do with the knob. The reset is always the same: knob off, tank off, wait five minutes, open the tank slowly, then open the knob.

When It Lights but Dies Thirty Seconds Later
This is a flame-sensing problem, not a gas problem, and it has a specific cause worth understanding.
Gas appliances with a pilot use a thermocouple, a probe of two dissimilar metals that generates a tiny voltage when it’s hot. That voltage holds the gas valve open. Take the heat away and the voltage collapses and the valve snaps shut, which is precisely what you want a gas valve to do when a flame blows out in the wind.
So a fire pit that dies the moment you release the knob is telling you the probe isn’t getting hot enough. Three usual reasons:
- You let go too soon. Hold longer. Many units want a full minute.
- The probe is sooted or corroded. A gentle scuff with fine emery cloth restores contact.
- The probe has drifted out of the flame. The tip should sit in the flame, not beside it.

If the flame is strong, you’ve held the knob for a minute, and it still dies, the thermocouple is likely failing. That’s an inexpensive part and a service call, not a DIY gas repair unless you know what you’re doing.
Where a Gas Fire Pit Can and Can’t Go
This is the part with real consequences. Read it twice.
Gas and charcoal appliances, the CPSC warns, present a risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning that could result in injury or death, and should be used outside only, in a well-ventilated area. Never in a garage, breezeway, carport, porch, or under a surface that will burn.
The awkward case is the covered patio. People assume outdoors plus a roof still counts as outdoors. Harvard’s environmental health and safety guidance on LP gas explains why that reasoning fails: an enclosed or partly enclosed area lets carbon monoxide accumulate, and leaking propane expands enormously in a confined space. A roof with three walls is not a patio; it’s a room.
Separate CPSC grill guidance says to use it at least 10 feet away from your house or any building, and not to attempt repairs on the tank valve yourself. CPSC also warns never to bring the propane tank into the house.
When to stop and get help: if you smell gas and can’t find the source, or a leak won’t stop when you tighten the connection, shut the tank valve, leave the area, and call your propane supplier or the fire department. Don’t hunt for it with a flame and don’t operate switches nearby. If a fire escapes the pit, call 911.

How Smokeless Fire Pits Actually Work
Now the wood side, briefly. The design is genuinely clever.
A smokeless pit has a double wall with a gap between the layers and a ring of holes around the top rim. As the fire heats the shell, air is drawn in through vents at the bottom, travels up the gap between the walls, gets preheated on the way, and jets back in through those top holes.
Smoke is unburned fuel. Wood gives off combustible gases as it heats, and in an ordinary fire pit a lot of them drift off unburned as visible smoke. Inject preheated oxygen right where those gases are, and a good share of them ignite instead. That’s the secondary burn, and it’s why these pits show a curtain of flame around the rim once they’re hot.
An caveat: “Smokeless” is a marketing word, not a specification. No wood fire is smoke-free. These pits reduce visible smoke noticeably once they reach temperature, but they smoke like anything else during startup, and they smoke badly if you feed them damp wood. We haven’t found a government or university source that quantifies the reduction, so treat any percentage claim you see with suspicion.

Three things determine whether yours performs:
- Dry wood. The EPA advises burning only seasoned, dry wood and says moisture content is best under 20 percent, with at least six months of seasoning. Damp wood defeats the design entirely.
- Don’t overfill. Wood stacked above the top vent holes blocks the secondary air.
- Let it get hot. The secondary burn doesn’t start until the shell is up to temperature, usually ten to fifteen minutes in.

Five Things Not to Do
Five rules, no exceptions.
- Don’t use a gas fire pit indoors, in a garage, or under a partly enclosed roof. Carbon monoxide has no smell.
- Don’t put water in a gas burner. Not to extinguish it, not to cool it, not ever.
- Don’t store the propane cylinder indoors or in a shed, garage, or tent.
- Don’t leave any fire pit burning unattended, gas included. A flame that blows out with the gas still on is a gas leak.
- Don’t point the smoke at your neighbours. Wood pits drift; that’s basic campground etiquette and it applies at home too.
- Don’t cook over a gas fire pit unless it’s built for it. Grease and decorative media do not mix. Cooking gear get its own guide in fire pit cooking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Close it down in two moves. Close the burner control knob and close the tank valve clockwise until it stops, then confirm the flame is fully out. Manuals differ on which to close first, so follow yours. Never pour water into the burner.
In order of likelihood: empty tank, tank valve not fully open, dead igniter battery, or lava rock and glass covering the burner ports. If it lights but stays tiny, the excess-flow safety has tripped. Shut everything, wait five minutes, and reopen the tank slowly.

It depends entirely on the burner’s rating and your flame height, so check your manual for the consumption figure rather than trusting a general number.
They noticeably reduce visible smoke once hot, through a preheated secondary air burn. They are not smoke-free, they smoke during startup, and they perform poorly with damp wood.
Once the wood has burned down, yes, but pouring water into a screaming-hot steel shell risks warping it. Let it burn down and cool first, then douse and check it’s cold.
One Last Thing
The failure everyone remembers isn’t dramatic. It’s standing in the dark clicking an igniter at a tank you never opened all the way, getting progressively more annoyed, while the fix is a five-second turn of a valve.
Open the tank slowly. Wait thirty seconds. Flame in place before the knob. Hold it down longer than feels necessary. Close both valves and check the flame is out before you go in.
Do that and a gas fire pit is the least demanding fire you’ll ever run, which is the whole reason to own one. Then you can get on with the good part, which is everything that happens around it after dark.
